The Barstool’s Story

Intro….With nothing having been written in over a month, it seems my creativity has taken a vacation. Since it’s my day off I’ve decided to call my creativity back to work, via an awesome app on my phone called Daily Prompts. Today’s creative writing prompt is this;

“You are a barstool. Tell the story of the person who sat on you last.”

Here we go… FYI. I don’t drink or go to bars, except for the one where I happen to be a line cook. So this particular barstool will be there, on the brand new rooftop patio at Anchor Bar, in Jackson Square, Hamilton, Ontario. Maybe this will even inspire you to give Anchor Bar a try if you haven’t already πŸ˜‰

Tom was a young man in his late twenties. I knew the moment he sat down, that today was a day of celebration. I had a feeling it had something to do with the beaming young woman who sat on the barstool next to me.

Tom and the young woman drank sparkling water, and talked about the day’s events while they waited for their appetizers to arrive. After a few minutes a server brought a Franks Original salad for Tom, and the Anti Oxidant Salad for his lady.

While Tom and his lady, Julia, ate their salads in near silence I wondered to myself if their personalities matched their choice in salads. Perhaps Tom was a mild man who loved a little spice in his life, but then that would make Julia somewhat fruity. I quickly discarded the notion.

When their main dish, a chicken wing pizza, arrived. I could feel the excitement building in both Tom and Julia. Both commented on how delicious the pizza was, and then both at same time announced that they had big news to share.

Feeling that she had bigger news to share, Julia asked Tom to go first. Tom gave in and declared “I got a promotion!” Julia beamed and hugged him, saying “I’m so happy for you!”

“Alright, your turn.” Tom encouraged as he bit into another slice of pizza.

Julia took a deep breath and then softly announced to the love of her life. “I’m pregnant.”

Tom was so shocked he chocked on his pizza. Julia laughed and thumped his back. “Wow” Tom said when he could finally breath again. “That’s wonderful!” Tom hopped off me in fluid motion, grabbed his wife in a tight hug and spun her around.

Soon after that they were gone, and I was alone again, waiting for the next story with a happy ending to come along.

What did you think? I'd love to hear from you!
